In 1976, former Mamas and Papas member John Phillips contacted former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor to help him work on the soundtrack to the Nick Roeg film “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” Work for this recording took place around the corner from the homes of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger (who Phillips had partied with on many occasions) and it was only a matter of time before Keith came by and began jamming with his former bandmate. The idea was hatched to cut an album of new John Phillips compositions using the Stones members as his backing band. Soon Mick Jagger became involved as producer (and back-up singer) and he convinced Atlantic Records exec Ahmet Ertegun to finance the project. This would be the first and last time Mick Taylor would record in the studio with the Stones since his departure from the band. Recording began on August 16, 1977, the day Elvis died. Things started off great but soon John and Keith’s heroin habit began to hamper productivity. Mick Jagger (growing increasingly fed up with the situation) eventually abandoned the project as a lost cause. Atlantic followed suit when they realized the budget for the album had gone beyond $170,000 and the record still wasn’t complete. The Stones went on to do “Some Girls” while John was left to finish the album himself. It never did get finished. “Half Stoned” is the completed portion of the never realized album.
