Okay, enough of that. I made this recording on a tiny hand held recorder, sitting in an aisle seat, in about the tenth row in the orchestra of the Palladium in NYC. If I remember correctly, I just put the recorder on the floor next to my seat. I am amazed at the sound!! This tape ( a TDK-SA C-90) has held up for 30 plus years. This is the Heartbreakers as they kick off the “Refugee” tour. Tom and the band are in top form as they rip through song after song with Mike Campbell just killing it on lead guitar. I’ve seen Petty a dozen or so times, and this was their most electric performance ever. This is the Heartbreakers at their peak. If you are a Petty fan, crank up your stereo and play Disc 2’s first 2 cuts.
Listen To Her Heart and American Girl just smoke………I’ve never heard them played better.
I think that the second disc is better that the first one, as far as overall sound, but the whole show is really pretty good considering the times and the recorder that I used. I think that you’ll be pleasantly surprised. There is a glitch in the beginning of “The Wild One Forvever” where the tape got caught in the machine. It sounds like a record skipping for about 10 seconds. And, for whatever reason, the last encore is not as clear as the rest of the recording. Probabaly because people were on their feet. Check out this killer setlist.
